During an archeological dig in the early 1900’s a collection of Babylonian artifacts over 2000 years old was discovered. These stone treasures were assembled by a princess whom little is known about. Can you imagine the joy of an archeologist discovering a collection of historical treasures already labeled and dating from an even earlier time than the excavation he was unearthing?
Even though these artifacts gave Leonard Woolery an exciting find, it might have been a greater statement for civilization if they’d never been lost.
This discovery proved that remembering ancient society was important to someone from an earlier culture. But it's doubtful a lot of people shared the princess' interest in the collection.
Except during the occurrence of catastrophic events, people don’t normally leave behind things of value. Important things are kept secured or sold. Since rocks have little or no intrinsic value, I wondered they were left behind much in the same way a person today might dismiss pictures from someone’s estate because the faces mean nothing without a connection.
It's sad that more isn't known about the woman who created what may have been the first ever museum. But even though the treasures were temporarily lost, finding them gave us more insight into the past—just because the collection existed.
