Legend has it that Vikings were sneaking up on sleeping Scots to overtake them. One of the barefoot Vikings stepped on a thistle, and yelped in pain. The shout woke the Scots and the Scots protected themselves and were victorious. Hence, the thistle became the emblem of Scotland.
After hearing the story, I carefully touched the stickers on the thistle. I now believe that even a tough Viking would shout if landing barefoot on a thistle. The stickers look much softer than they feel but the ants don't seem to mind the barbs.
